The reading passage explains a problem that a certain company has faced and some possible plans for solving it. The listening passage is about the plans that were considered by the company president and the final decision he made.

According to the reading passage, Acme Accounting Company was facing a serious problem with tardiness. The junior accountans started to get used to coming late, so that one hour of missing work per day was considered ordinary by them. Consequently, the president of the company asked senior stuff to suggest possible solutions for dealing with this problem; thus, he could think over various ideas before he came to a final decision. As a result, two plans were submitted. One of them was to have tardy employees late after work and the other was substracting pay from their salary.

In the listening passage the lecturer talks about the president's reaction to the suggested solutions. The president thought that applying the first plan would be more like a bonus than a penalty, for it would give them the right to decide their own working schedule. Regarding the second plan, it could be a good choice but had a drawback. As a result of implementing it the company would lose work. Therefore, he decided to execute both solutions together. This way employees had to pay for their tardiness without the company losing work hours.
