The tables below give information about sales of fairtrade-labelled coffee and bananas in 1999 and 2004 in five European countries
The tables demonstrate information about sales of coffee and bananas in 1999 and 2004. A brief examination of these charts reveals that sales of bananas increased in Switzerland, the UK and Belgium. However, it decreased in Sweden and Denmark. Overall, it is noticed that coffee sales showed a climb in all five European countries.
First of all, Switzerland bought far more bananas than any of the other five countries in the year 1999. Its sales rose significantly from 15 to 47 million euros in the year 2004. Banana sales in the UK and Belgium also went up, from 1 to 5.5 and from 0.6 to 4 million euros, respectively in the year 2004, whereas banana sales in Sweden and Denmark showed a decline in this year. In Sweden the drop is seen from 1.8 to 1 and in Denmark from 2 to 0.9
In addition, only 1.5 million euros worth of coffee was bought in the UK in the year 1999. However, this country increased its sales sharply to 20 million euros in the year 2004, which was the highest uptrend seen among the 5 given countries that year. Although Switzerland was the biggest coffee buyer with 3 million euros of sale in the year 1999, this figure illustrated a relatively small growth to 6 million euros in the year 2004. Denmark, Belgium and Sweden also bought more coffee in the year 2004, but their increases were slight.
