In the last 20 years there have been significant developments in the field of information technology (IT), for example the World Wide Web and communication by email. However, these developments in IT are likely to have more negative effects than positive in the future.To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It can be seen that developments in the area of information technology (IT) have made progress significantly in the last two decades, the best examples of which are World Wide Web and communication via email. I am of the opinion that developments in IT will lead to more negative effects than positives ones due to the following reasons.

With regard to positive side, it can be claimed that communication means such as email along with technological progress ensure convenience. Thanks to email, today, people's communication is easier and faster. A case in point is commerce with countries. Now, there is no need to wait for letters and faxes. Another advantage is the fact that information access is simpler than it was in the past. For instance, a plenty of information is easily accessible for anyone in any corner of the world due to world wide web technology. All these kinds of developments have made life more comfortable and more liveable in today's world.

As for the opposing view, which I also agree, IT will more likely not be beneficial in the future. Using email, for example, can remove many kinds of traditional communication means such as letter, telephone and face to face conversation. For this reason, strong bonds among people will probably break off. This brings about decline in socializing which is human's basic ability. In addition, because of the large size of the Web, it is highly difficult to restrict and control included information. This leads to a great amount of concern regarding children who can easily access detrimental sites. Furthermore, computer viruses may spread easily through the net technology, which can be considered another drawback of IT.

To sum up, although developments in IT have brought a lot of advantages, in all likelihood, I agree that its drawbacks are more than its benefits. In the future, the disadvantages aspects of IT will need to be addressed if we do not take necessary measures to protect the individuals and society from its harmful effects.
