According to the reading passage, the issue that Acme Accounting was facing was serious tardiness on the part of the junior accountants. Because of the of the situation. Two of the top staff members were asked by the business president to submit alternative solutions to the problem. One possible solution to the problem of tardiness is for tardy employees to stay late after work to make up for any time lost earlier. The alternative option was for any tardy employees to be punished income for any time they were late.

The company president's reaction to these two plans is discussed in the listening paragraph. The first possible option, having staff remain late to make up for lost time, was rejected by the business president since it was not a strong enough penalty (though it was good that the missed work would be made up).The second possible alternative, in which employees would lose income for any missing work, was similarly rejected by the company president, because this plan would result in the company losing valuable work (though it was a rather stiff penalty). Finally, the firm president decided to combine both ideas (a tardy employee would lose income as well as have to make up the missing work) so that there would be a major punishment for tardiness but no job loss.
