The author of the reading passage focuses on a critical problem in Acme Accounting Company which is the lack of punctuality in the junior staff and discusses possible way outs in order to figure out this problem. Furthermore, the lecturer in the listening section presents the best suggestion, so that the issue could be sorted out.

The author mentions an obstacle that is revealed in the company which stemmed from the tardiness of juniour accountants. First of all, the tardiness of the employee's has significant impacts such as ineffectiveness, which results in a failure in success of the company. Besides, when some accountants arrive late to work, the company loses working hours as a consequence of it. To deal with this horrible difficulty, the company president wanted resolutions from the senior staff; thus, the senior staff came up with two possible solutions. On one hand, the personnels decided to create a make-up time for missed work. On the other hand, the seniors put forward an idea which was decreasing the salary check of the juniors. Consequently, this meant that the salaries of junior accountants would be subtracted.

The president of the company then considered the situation and reached a solution which was stated in the listening section. The lecturer discussed that neither making up work hours, nor salary diminshing was a seemly solution since they were both double-edged swords. The first resolution was not harsh enough, because the juniours got the right to choose their working hours. As a consequence, these were both a reward and a penalty. Moreover, the second idea was also not an appropriate way to crack the problem. Although the tardiness of the employee's seemed to reduce, due to the fact that they did not want salary cuts, the company still lacked working hours. Thus, this brought about another problem which was the company could not afford to lose out that much of labor. Owing to the fact that both solutions were not severe enough alone, the president decided to combine two suggestions and put a mixed version of ideas into the practice.
