News editors decide what to broadcast on television and what to print in newspapers. What factors do you think influence these decisions? Do we become used to bad news? Would it be better if more good news was reported?
Every day, we watch TV and read newspapers to get some news about what is happening in the world and generally it is the news editors that decide about the types of the news that are to be published. It is certainly true that several factors affect the making decision process of the editors. This essay will discuss various influences that are associated with the phenomenon above.
There are some elements to make news valuable which are the main factors for editors to show their determination when choosing news. Firstly, press companies need to gain money for preserving continuity and that could explain the importance of the rating. Therefore, the editors sometimes decide the pressing and broadcasting news by considering the possibilities of watching and reading the news by the audience. For example, people usually pay attention to disasters and dramatic news such as traffic accidents, murders, fightings. As a result of this, they select this kind of news to put on headlines and broadcast on the evening news. The second contributory factor is the fact that in many countries news editors have to give up because of the political pressure, distorting facts. To put it another way, they are controlled entirely by political parties and enjoined to disregard the truth. This is particularly true in many undemocratic, middle-class countries. These can be the main motives for most of the editors while deciding about the types of the news on TV or in the newspaper.
Moreover, even though we are accustomed to watching and reading bad news, they make people to be more aware of the events around them. When it is argued which type of news, bad or good, should be published, I strongly support that there should be a balance between the type of news which is shown on Television and in the newspapers, because if the press always reports the good news, it would not be a realistic and persuasive situation. However, if they present the bad news more, people could lose their motivations and beliefs about the possibility of living happily in the world.
In conclusion, today's news and information on media that we receive are influenced by some main factors as hooking audience, increasing profits, and obeying political regulations. As a result, the balance which the press should pay regard to while choosing the types of news is extremely important.
