Some people think that the best way to reduce crime is to give longer prison sentences. Others, however, believe there are better alternative ways of reducing crime.
Discuss both views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.
Crime is a seriously increasing problem in most societies. Since ancient times, societies have tended to give long prison sentences to punish the criminals. Most societies believe that this is the best way to hinder crime. Different from this idea, a part of society consider other types of punishments. They are of the opinion that these types will result in more efficient consequences. I am in side of other kinds punishments rather than long prison sentences.
Firstly, the supporters of long prison sentences claim that one of the first benefits of this disciplinary action type is rehabilitation. The proponents of this idea assert that long term punishment provides a purge for the offenders. For instance, those who commit a serious offense such as murder will need a long time in a reformatory during which they will undoubtebly be educated by psychologists. In addition, long prison sentences will be a deterrent factor for those who are thinking to commit any offense.
However, these arguments have been criticized for several reasons by those are appose this punshment type. They put the idea forth that the first and foremost cause of putting an offender behind the irons for a long time is the reflection of lack of compassion towards them. They think that the offenders are also humans and therefore they need empathy and support in order to be able to restand and improve their humanity and establish a new life in the society. If the government puts them in jail, we lose them completely. In addition, some jailhouses do not have good opportunities. As a result, to regain these humans to the society, the governments should improve facilities for humanitarian conditions.
In my opinion, in spite the fact that many countries have lengthy prison sentences, the crime rate has continued to increase in these countries. As a result, it seems that governments are inevitably in need of urgent alternative methods. One of the best ways to combat the problem is trying to increase the education level and standards of living of the public. Governments should necessarily improve the education system so as to raise the culture and education level of the citizens. In addition, most powerfull countries should distribute sufficient financial aids if they are to solve the issue of poverty. Only in this case will the criminals tend to stop committing crimes, which ultimately will lead to a considerable decrease in the rate of crime in the society.
To sum up, while a part of society hold the idea that long jailing punishments can yield in effective solutions for the issue of crime rate by presenting their reasons, the other part confirm that other alternative ways are needed to be applied if the aim is to eradicate the crime in the societies. They have their own supportive reasons. I believe that the benefits of these alternative ways much outweigh the drawbacks. To achieve these blessings, governments should improve the legislation poicy to pave the way for regaining the offenders to the public.
