Information technology is changing many aspects of our lives and now dominates our home, leisure and work activities.
To what extent do the benefits of information technology outweigh the disadvantages?
Recently, the world witnessed breakthrough developments in the field of information technology. Now, we can produce, store, retrieve and send more data than past generations could do. However, these kinds of developments may bring some unexpected consequences in our lives. Even though there are many undeniable advantages, I am of the opinion that there also exists various negative outcomes that need to be considered seriously.
Thanks to the new technological opportunities, we carry the whole world in our pockets. We reach the information that we need in seconds, and we are able to share our current status with friends without calling them. We play games with friends without actually meeting them. We take courses from universities that are not even located in our country. We do not need to write diaries or keep our photos in albums anymore. We can do all of them via the internet, computers, and smartphones. Moreover, many companies do not have expenses for large offices because employers can work from their homes. The spectacular inventions in information technology made the world somewhere more fun, more economic, more reachable.
On the other hand, every time we share and store information, that information gets out of our control. Because the information on the internet is stored somewhere we cannot reach and remove; thus, people who accumulate them own them. In addition, it is not only about the information that we share but the data we "allow" websites, online services, and apps. Most of the time, we do not actually know what we allow them to store, use and even sell. These unknown data can be used to shape our shopping inclines at best and our political behaviors in the worst-case scenario. Thus, we lose our right to have privacy and critical thinking. Deciding free of manipulations is becoming a utopia.
In conclusion, the development of information technology provides us with gathering knowledge without any effort, and spending time with our loved ones despite long distances. However, these developments can bring about several ethical problems. As the usage of information technology is indispensable, I believe that immediate regulations are inevitable.
