The following bar chart shows the different modes of transport used to travel to and from work in one European city in 1960, 1980 and 2000.
The bar chart illustrates different kinds of transportation used in a European city during the period from 1960 to 2000. It can be clearly seen that the number of people who used the car drastically increased over this time of period, whereas the number of people who used the bike and foot significantly decreased.
Firstly, the proportion of travellers who preferred cars were the least among the use of the other three kinds of transportation vehicles in 1960. In this year, approximately 35 % of people commuted on foot, compared to only 5% of people travelled by car. In 1960, the percentages of commuters who chose bike and buses were around 25% and 18%, respectively. Travelling by bus was the most popular transport mode in 1980, but then this figure decreased to about 17% of people in 2000. The ratio of travelers who preferred bike was the biggest percentage in 1990, it was at just below 5 percentage in 2000.
After the development of the technology, most of the people did not prefer to walk. In 1960, the proportion of travelers who commuted on foot was at just under 35, while this percentages decreased dramatically to around 17 % of all travellers in 2000.
